The case for Mutianyu
Why Mutianyu is the best section for most visitors
Restored ramparts, forested views, fewer crowds and a toboggan down.
Beautifully restored and safe
Mutianyu is one of the most thoroughly restored sections of the Great Wall, which means the ramparts, watchtowers and walkways are in excellent condition and safe to walk. You get the grandeur of the Wall — the crenellations, the towers marching along the ridge — without the crumbling, hazardous footing of the wild sections. For most visitors, that combination of authenticity and safety is exactly right.
Forested ridges and long views
What sets Mutianyu apart scenically is its setting: the wall runs along densely forested mountain ridges, so the views are green and layered, spectacular in autumn when the hills turn colour. The restored wall snaking over the wooded peaks is one of the most photogenic Great Wall scenes you can reach easily, and it feels far more remote and natural than the busier Badaling.
Fewer crowds than Badaling
Because Badaling absorbs the bulk of the tour-bus traffic, Mutianyu is noticeably quieter, giving you space to walk, take photos and actually take in the Wall. It's rarely empty at peak times, but the difference in crowding compared with Badaling is significant — and for many visitors, being able to experience the Wall without a crush is what makes Mutianyu the better day out.
Cable car up, toboggan down
Mutianyu is served by a cable car and a chairlift that carry you up to the wall, removing the steep initial climb and making it accessible to a wide range of fitness levels. The signature flourish is the toboggan run — a metal-track slide back down through the trees — which is genuinely fun and a favourite with families. These options make the visit flexible and enjoyable rather than a slog.
Who it suits
Mutianyu suits almost everyone: first-time visitors, families, those who want great scenery without a hard hike, and anyone keen to avoid Badaling's crowds. Serious hikers may prefer the wilder sections, but for the classic, comfortable, photogenic Great Wall day that most people are looking for, Mutianyu is hard to beat — which is exactly why it's the section we'd point most visitors to.
